چکیده

This paper assesses the performance of mobile messaging and VoIP connections. We investigate the CPU requirements of WhatsApp and IMO under different scenarios. This analysis also enabled a comparison of the performance of these applications on two Android operating system (OS) versions: KitKat or Lollipop. Two models of smartphones were considered, viz. Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy S4. The applications behavior was statistically investigated for both sending and receiving VoIP calls. Connections have been examined over 3G and WiFi. The handset model plays a decisive role in CPU requirements of the application. t-tests showed that IMO has a statistical better performance that WhatsApp whatever be the Android at a significance level 1%, on Galaxy Note 4. In contrast, WhatsApp requires less CPU than IMO on Galaxy S4 whatever be the OS and access (3G/WiFi). Galaxy Note 4 using WiFi always outperformed S4 in terms of processing efficiency.

Measuring the Declared SDK Versions and Their Consistency with API Calls in Android Apps

Android has been the most popular smartphone system, with multiple platform versions (e.g., KITKAT and Lollipop) active in the market. To manage the application’s compatibility with one or more platform versions, Android allows apps to declare the supported platform SDK versions in their manifest files. In this paper, we make a first effort to study this modern software mechanism. Our objective...

Profiling Power Consumption of VoIP Applications on Android Smartphones

VoIP applications are getting popular due to their features of low cost and convenience. They have a high business potential over Wi-Fi or 3G network for smartphones applications. One possible barrier to the widespread adoption could be the high power consumption. And this in turn is due to higher CPU utilization introduced by sophisticated encryption algorithms for the sake of security. In thi...

Augmenting Mobile 3G Using WiFi: Measurement, System Design, and Implementation

We investigate if WiFi access can be used to augment 3G capacity. To understand the feasibility of 3G augmentation, we conduct a detailed study of 3G and WiFi access from moving vehicles, in three different cities. We find that the average 3G and WiFi availability across the testbeds is 87% and 11%, respectively. We also find that, unlike stationary environments, WiFi throughput is lower than 3...

COARA: Code Offloading on Android with AspectJ

Smartphones suffer from limited computational capabilities and battery life. A method to mitigate these problems is code offloading: executing application code on a remote server. We introduce COARA, a middleware platform for code offloading on Android that uses aspectoriented programming (AOP) with AspectJ. AOP allows COARA to intercept code for offloading without a customized compiler or modi...
